After arriving in Hong Kong International Airport, exit through B Exit after clearing customs. You will then arrive at the Arrival Hall B. Keep walking forward and exit through the ramp. Hong Kong Airport Public Bus Terminal

Board public bus route number A43 (To Fanling) which operates by Long Win from 7:00 am to midnight. The fare will be HKD $ 30.90 and you do need to prepare exact change if you don’t have a MTR Octopus Card. Take this bus to Sheung Shui bus stop. The duration is about 1 hour long not including any waiting time for the bus. You will then walk to the Sheung Shui MTR station which is only a few metres away from the bus stop. Board the MTR towards Lo Wu Station, which is the next stop. The duration is about 10 minutes not including any waiting time. The fare is about HKD $ 20.

After getting to Lo Wu Station, you will need to get off and walk to the Hong Kong Immigration building. Once cleared Hong Kong Immigrations, you will then walk to the China Immigrations building. Depending on the time of day you are travelling, this process may take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. Many travellers use the Lo Wu checkpoint to enter China so it can be extremely crowded and queues can be very long during peak hours. Also note that there are lots of walking involved. You will also need proper China Visitor Visa to clear China Immigrations.

Once you have cleared China Immigration and Customs, you can then walk to the Shenzhen Metro Luohu Station that is nearby. You can find it by following the signs. By using the Shenzhen Metro, you can reach almost anywhere in Shenzhen if you know which station to go to. Provided that you don’t mind a bit of walking and asking for directions. It is a very big system with many different lines and interchanges. You should do more research on which station that is closest to your destination in Shenzhen before your trip. Click here for a map of the Shenzhen Metro system.

Advantages

  • Very low cost. The Shenzhen Metro is very affordable. You will get to your destination in Shenzhen from Hong Kong Airport using this method with under HKD $ 100.

Disadvantages

  • This takes the longest time. Depending on the time of day of your travel, you may spend a long time at the immigration borders of each side. The public bus ride takes roughly 1 hour already. Also, Lo Wu isn’t the closest border to China from Hong Kong Airport so you are travelling a longer distance than other transportation methods.
  • Very inconvenient. You will have to get off and on multiple times, stop at all bus and Metro stops along the way, and walk with your luggage through crowded areas of Lo Wu border.
  • You will need to do some research before using the Shenzhen Metro. Otherwise you will waste a lot of time getting off the wrong station or getting on the wrong line.

2) Hong Kong Airport To Shenzhen By Cross-Border Coach Services

If doing it completely by public bus and MTR is too much of an hassle for you, your next option is to go from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen via cross-border coach services. These coach services generally will take you to select drop-off locations in Shenzhen via the Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang Checkpoint or Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint.

If you are going to the Shenzhen Bao’an (including Shenzhen Airport), Nanshan or Shekou districts, you will most likely use the Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint. If you are going to the Shenzhen Futian district, you will most likely use the Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang Checkpoint. The coach company will determine which border crossing to use base on your drop-off point.

Service counters for cross-border coach services are located at Hong Kong Airport Terminal 2 counters C10 to C14 (follow signs of Mainland Coaches). These counters are operated by different companies and they have different routes and drop-off points available. Make sure you check with each company to see what works best for your desired destination in Shenzhen.

If non of these services have drop-off points near your hotel in Shenzhen, you may choose to be dropped off at the border crossing. After crossing the border, you can take a taxi directly to your destination. This will be more expensive than using the coach service completely but you will save the time from finding your way from the drop-off points.

Cross-border coach services generally operates every hour from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. Some services have more frequent departures (as fast as every 15 minutes) during peak periods. Fare to the borders is around HKD $ 100. Fare to drop-off points inside Shenzhen range from HKD $ 180 to $ 220.

You will board the coach at Terminal 2 just behind the counters. The duration to the border takes roughly 30 minutes as it is mostly highway from the airport. Once you reach the Hong Kong side of the checkpoint, you  have to get your luggage and get off the coach. You will have to walk a few minutes, up and down a few stairs along the way. If you are using the Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang crossing, you will have to board the coach again after clearing Hong Kong Immigrations. The coach will then take you to the China side of the checkpoint where you will have to take your luggage and get off the coach again for China Immigrations. If you are using the Shenzhen Bay crossing, you do not need to board and get off this coach for a second time because the Hong Kong and China Immigrations are in the same building.

After clearing China Immigrations you will be collected by an agent of the coach company who will take you to board a different coach for the rest of the journey in Shenzhen. The agent recognizes you by the colourful sticker on your chest that was giving to you when you purchase your ticket. Be extra careful of scammers that pretend to be agents of coach companies and approach you for extra fee. Real agents usually have uniforms or badges and do not ask you for money.

Advantages

  • Relatively cheap. You can reach Shenzhen from Hong Kong Airport for under HKD $ 250 in most cases.
  • Quite well organized. It will take away a lot of confusion and hassle if your destination in Shenzhen is nearby one of the drop-off points.

Disadvantages

  • Very inconvenient with heavy luggage. You will have to get off the coach with your luggage and walk some distance to the Hong Kong Immigrations and do it again for the China Immigrations. This can be a huge hassle especially after a long haul flight to Hong Kong.
  • Only makes sense if the coach service has a drop-off point near your hotel or destination in Shenzhen. If not, you will have to catch a taxi to get there from the drop-off point.
  • Long border crossing time during peak hours at both checkpoints. If you are travelling between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, expect to spend around 30 to 45 minutes to clear both immigrations.

3) Hong Kong Airport To Shenzhen By SkyPier Ferry

Another option to go from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen is by ferry. SkyPeir is the ferry terminal inside Hong Kong International Airport for arriving passengers to transfer to multiple cities within the Pearl River Delta and Macau. SkyPier has two routes to Shenzhen: one is to Shenzhen Shekou Terminal and another to Shenzhen Fuyong Terminal (connected to Shenzhen Bao’an Airport).

If you want to transfer to Shenzhen using the ferry, you do not go through Hong Kong Immigrations nor collect your baggage. After arriving and exiting the gate, follow signs to the Transfers Area E2 or Ferries to Mainland. At the Transfers Area E2, you can find counters to purchase ferry tickets. The company that operates ferries to Shenzhen is called CKS.

When you buy your ticket, make sure you give the staff your airline baggage tags. They will collect your baggage and place them onboard the ferry for you. For service to Shekou Terminal, fare is HKD $ 220 for adults. For service to Fuyong Terminal, fare is HKD $ 295 for adults.

The duration of the ferry ride is about 30 minutes to Shekou Terminal and 40 minutes to Fuyong Terminal. Once arriving at the terminal in Shenzhen, you will have to take a taxi onward to your hotel or other destination.

Below are the ferry departure times for each terminal:

To Shenzhen Shekou Terminal
Hong Kong Airport To Shenzhen Shekou Ferry Timetable

To Shenzhen Fuyong (Bao’an Airport) Terminal
Hong Kong Airport To Shenzhen Airport Ferry Timetable

Please note that you will have to purchase your ticket 60 minutes before the departure time of the ferry. For example, if you arrive at the ticket counter at 10:30 am for Shekou Terminal, you won’t be able to catch the 11:00 am ferry. You will have to wait for the 12:30 pm one. This increases your wait time to 2 hours. Plus another 30 minute ferry ride, your total time to Shekou Terminal is 2.5 hours long.

Advantages

  • Convenient if you are going to the Shekou/Nanshan District or Shenzhen Bao’an Airport. You don’t have to clear Hong Kong Immigrations or collect your luggage. All you have to do is clear China Immigrations and collect your luggage after arriving in Shenzhen.
  • A cost effective way to get to Shenzhen Airport. For under HKD $ 300 you can get there from Hong Kong Airport directly without the hassle of border crossing.

Disadvantages

  • Only makes sense if you are going to Shekou or Bao’an Airport. If you need to go to the Futian District (the city centre and financial area of Shenzhen), you will need to take a 45 minute taxi ride or a 1.5 hour Metro ride. This makes the total journey the longest among all transportation options.
  • Long waiting time. Your waiting time for the next ferry is at least 60 minutes. If you arrive in between two ferry departure times, you may need to wait up to 2 hours for the next one due to the 60 minute check-in restriction. Adding on the ferry ride and transportation to your hotel, the total journey can take up to 4 hours during rush hour.

4) Hong Kong Airport To Shenzhen By Taxi

All the above transportation methods from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen sound too confusing and difficult to you? A somewhat better solution is to travel complete by taxi. You will get to your destination faster most of the time and you will avoid some of the unnecessary stoppage and waiting time. However, you will still have to get off the taxi at Hong Kong side of the border checkpoint, walk across the border, and board another taxi in Shenzhen.

After arriving at Hong Kong Airport, all you have to do is go to the taxi station located outside Arrival Hall A. Exit the arrival hall and turn left and you will see a line of taxis and people queuing for them. Note that during peak hours and early mornings, the wait for a vacant taxi can be extremely long.

Hong Kong Airport Taxi Station Lineup

The above picture was taken by a traveller waiting for taxi in the early morning of a weekday. As you can see, the queue time can be very long so be prepared if you decide to use a taxi from Hong Kong Airport.

Depending on which part of Shenzhen you plan to go to, you can choose to cross via Lok Ma Chau Border – Huanggang Crossing or Shenzhen Bay Crossing. Like previously stated, the Huanggang Crossing is good if you plan to go to Shenzhen Futian District also known as the financial/downtown district of Shenzhen. If you plan to go to the Nanshan or Shekou District, Shenzhen Bay Crossing is the best option. Also, Shenzhen Bay is among the closest border crossing from Hong Kong Airport. Taxi cost from Hong Kong airport to these two border crossings should be around HKD $ 200.

The Lok Ma Chau – Huanggang Crossing is the only Shenzhen border crossing that operates 24 hours a day. It is one of the most popular crossings for people travelling by coach buses, taxis, and private cars. Unlike the Lok Ma Chau – Futian Crossing, the Huanggang Crossing does not have a connected MTR/Metro system and is mainly for ground transportation travellers. The big drawback about the Lok Ma Chau – Huanggang Crossing is that the two immigration offices are separated by a fairly long road/bridge. When arriving at this checkpoint, you will have to get off at the Hong Kong Immigration building and go through Hong Kong Customs. Once done that, you will have to buy a ticket and take a yellow shuttle bus to the China Immigration building. The shuttle ride is roughly 7 minutes long. After clearing China Customs, you will exit the building and try to get a taxi in the taxi queue.

The Shenzhen Bay Crossing is much easier compared the the Huanggang Crossing. Both Hong Kong and China immigration officers are located in the same building. You don’t need to take a shuttle or walk long distance to the other building like most other crossings between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. After clearing both customs inside the same building, you can exit and line up to get a taxi. Shenzhen Bay Crossing is a newer and more organized checkpoint and it is less chaotic than the Huanggang Crossing. Hour of operations for the Shenzhen Bay Crossing is from 6:30 AM to midnight daily.

Taxi fare in Shenzhen depends on how far your destination is. In general, you can get to almost anywhere within Shenzhen for under $ 100 RMB.

Please note that most taxi drivers at the border crossings will avoid charging by the metre. Instead, they will ask you where you want to go and tell you a fixed price and see if you are willing to pay that. You should do some research about the estimate taxi fare from the crossing of your choice to your destination before going. This way you won’t be scammed as it is very common for Shenzhen taxi drivers to charge higher prices to foreigners.

Advantages

  • Quite simple and flexible for a relatively reasonable price.
  • You can set your own schedule and go to Shenzhen any time you wish during the day.

Disadvantages

  • Long taxi queues both in Hong Kong Airport and outside the Shenzhen immigration buildings.
  • Very inconvenient if you travel via the Lok Ma Chau – Huanggang Crossing. You will have to hop on and off the connector shuttle bus with your luggage.
  • Immigration buildings can be very crowded and chaotic inside. Especially during weekends and public holidays.
  • Foreigners are often scammed by taxi drivers by charging a higher price or going around cycles to ramp up the bill.
